Shockwave Therapy for Chronic Pain in London, Ontario

Why won’t this pain just go away?
Have you had heel pain, tennis elbow or a stubborn tendon problem for months? If rest, stretching and over-the-counter pain relief have not helped, you may have a long-standing soft-tissue condition that needs more than time. In that case, our London, Ontario clinicians may discuss shockwave therapy for chronic pain with you.
What is shockwave therapy?
Shockwave therapy, also called extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT), sends acoustic pressure waves through the skin to tendons, ligaments and other soft tissue. Researchers believe it stimulates the body’s own repair response and increases local blood flow.
It is a non-invasive option, and researchers have studied it for several tendon conditions. As a result, clinicians often suggest it when rest, exercise and other conservative care have not fully resolved the problem.
What conditions does shockwave therapy help with?
After an assessment, your clinician may suggest shockwave therapy for:
- plantar fasciitis (chronic heel pain)
- Achilles tendinopathy
- tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow
- rotator cuff tendinopathy
- patellar tendinopathy (jumper’s knee)
- persistent muscle tightness and trigger points
- calcific tendinitis
However, it does not suit everyone. First, your clinician reviews your health history. Then they explain the expected benefits, risks and alternatives, and they tell you if another approach or a referral makes more sense.
What does a shockwave session feel like?
The sensation is usually a rhythmic tapping or pulsing. Some areas can feel tender during treatment, so your clinician adjusts the intensity to your comfort. Sessions are short, often 10 to 15 minutes, and you do not need anesthesia. Most plans include a series of sessions. Responses vary from person to person, so your clinician reviews your progress along the way.
Why combine shockwave therapy with other care?
Shockwave therapy often works as one part of a broader plan. Depending on your assessment, that plan may also include chiropractic care, physiotherapy-guided strengthening or massage therapy for surrounding muscle tension. That way, your plan covers movement and strength as well as pain.
